Tour Itinerary:

Vertical Horizons | 8-Day Sri Lanka Adventure & Wildlife Expedition

Your Chauffer  meets you at BIA for a scenic transfer to the Borderlands River Camp. After settling into your riverside base, cross the Kelani River by dugout canoe to enter the Makandawa Forest Reserve. This is a birdwatcher’s sanctuary; keep your eyes peeled for the Green-billed Coucal and the vibrant Three-toed Kingfisher.

Stay: Over Night Stay in Kithulgala (River Camp)

Start the day with adrenaline. Navigate the Kelani River’s rapids—a world-class rafting experience suitable for those aged 10 and up. After drying off, ascend into the highlands to Haputale. In the afternoon, walk through tea estates where the machinery in the factories still hums with 100-year-old British colonial precision.

Stay: Over Night Stay in Haputale (Mountain Cottage)

A dawn departure with a packed breakfast takes you to Horton Plains, 7,000 feet above sea level. This is a prehistoric landscape of cloud forests and grasslands. Trek to World’s End for a spectacular cliff-side view and visit Baker’s Falls. Watch for the shaggy-coated Bear Monkey and the endemic Sambar Deer.

Stay: Over Night Stay in Haputale (Mountain Cottage)

Visit Lipton’s Seat at sunrise on Poonagala Hill. On a clear day, you can see the Hambantota Harbour on the south coast from this 1,900m viewpoint. After breakfast, descend from the mountains to the dry-zone lowlands of Yala. Embark on your first afternoon safari in search of the Sri Lankan Leopard.

Stay: Over Night Stay in Yala (Luxury Beach Camp)

Dedicate the day to the felines. Your naturalist will use "the language of the forest"—the alarm calls of Spotted Deer and Gray Langurs—to track leopards. This deep-dive approach maximizes your chances of seeing the apex predator in its natural habitat.

Stay: Over Night Stay in Yala (Luxury Beach Camp)

Two safaris (dawn and dusk) focus on Yala’s broader ecology. During the dry season (June–Sept), watch for Mugger Crocodiles in shrinking waterholes. With 300 bird species recorded, look for Malabar-pied Hornbills and the iridescent Blue-tailed Bee-eaters.

Stay: Over Night Stay in Yala (Luxury Beach Camp)

Visit Nimalawa Aranya, a serene forest monastery where monks live in harmony with the surrounding sanctuary. Afterward, travel to the coast. End the day with a boat ride through the Bentota River Mangroves, home to 6-foot-long Water Monitors and troops of Macaques.

Stay: Over Night Stay in Bentota/Induruwa (Beach Cabanas)

The calm waters of the Bentota Lagoon are your final playground. Choose from Jet Skiing, Windsurfing, or Banana Boat rides. After a final seaside lunch, your Navigator provides a private transfer back to the airport.

Traveler Essentials:Your Questions Answered.

Is the white-water rafting safe for children?

Yes, the Kelani River Rapids are Grade 2 and 3, making them exciting but safe for children aged 10 and above. We provide international-standard safety gear and licensed operators.

What should I pack for Horton Plains?

At 7,000 feet, it is cold and windy in the early morning. Pack a warm fleece or light jacket, and sturdy walking shoes/boots for the 9km loop trek.

Will I definitely see a leopard in Yala?

While sightings are never "guaranteed" in the wild, this itinerary provides 3 full days in Yala, which statistically offers the highest probability of sightings in the world.

Are the leeches an issue in the rainforest?

In Kithulgala and Horton Plains, leeches can be present if it has rained. Your Navigator will provide leech socks or repellent to ensure your trek is comfortable.

How long is the drive from the mountains to the jungle?

The drive from Haputale to Yala takes roughly 3 to 4 hours, transitioning from misty tea fields to the arid scrub jungle.
